Rabbeinu Eliyahu of Vilna, the famous Vilna Gaon, was one of the greatest gedolim in recent history. His encyclopedic knowledge of the Torah, which gave him an understanding of every type of knowledge in the world, was legendary, as were his fear of Hashem and his performance of the mitzvos. He is considered one of the major links of our mesorah.
